His clothes were old
And he smelled like wine.
'Said, "Hey listen buddy...
Can you spare a dime?"
I reached down in my pocket
But that old man began to fall.
He said, "Thanks alot son just the same...
Guess I won't need it at all."

Then he handed me a ticket
For a pawn he'd never claim.
None of the papers read that he was dead.
Nobody knew his name.
I can still remember
The day that old man died.
He said, "Won't you please be real good to her...
She was a friend of mine."

So I went down to that old dirty place
Where dreams are bought and sold.
The guy behind the counter said,
"Man this claim is pretty old...
But I'll see if I can find it..."
It took awhile but sure enough,
He found an old guitar case
Buried beneath the dust.

Well I opened that old guitar case
When I got inside of my car
And resting there so quiety
Was this old here guitar
And a note was taped to it's worn out face
And this is what it said,
"To anyone any place..."
Yah this is how it read...

"This old here guitar
May not get you far,
But it is all I have for you.
It's made out of steel and wood
And if you treat her nice
I know that she will treat you oh so good...

This old here guitar
May not get you far,
But it is all I have for you.
She's been on at least a hundred trains.
She's played around with all the big time names.
She was born with a sweetness in her soul
And she began a little thing called 'Rock and Roll'...

This old here guitar
May not get you far,
But it is all I have for you.
She made people smile in spite of it all.
She's even played at Carnegie Hall...
They would clap their hands and beg for more
She's even tried her best to put an end to war...

This old here guitar
May not get you far,
But it can play...
It can play...
It can play a song for you."
